| The
free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries
pass through 90 miles of scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide
range of natural and historic features, including canyons as much
as 600 feet deep.
The
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area covers over 100,000
acres. The gorge area is maintained in primitive condition, while
the adjacent rim area has established recreational facilities, including
hiking and riding trails, and camping facilities. The rivers are
popular for canoeing, kayaking and rafting. The river gorges contain
several rare and endangered plant and animal species.
